100 Years of Marine Aviation

May 22 will mark the centennial birthday of Marine Aviation. In celebration, Marines are raising funds for a memorial to honor those that have served in Marine Aviation for the past 100 years at the Veterans Memorial Park.

The Verdin Company will create a 30-feet tall memorial that will honor the ultimate sacrifice of the marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen who have fallen in the line of duty while serving with Marine Aviation. The tower will house a large clock including the words “Take Time to Remember” and a 24-inch cast bronze bell that represents Marine Aviation’s lifesaving action while flying the Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) and Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) mission that has been saving military lives since 1928.

“The Memorial will commemorate the service of all Marines who have ever participated in fixing, flying, crewing and controlling all aviation warfare specialties of Marine Air in combat operations in the defense of this great nation,”  Retired Lt. Col. Dave Glassman told the IN.

Brett/Robinson Vacation Rentals of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Ala., has partnered with the MCAA McCutcheon Squadron of Marine Corps Air Station New River, N.C., a non-profit organization, and the Geiger Squadron of Pensacola to host a “Warrior Night” weekend event May 10-13, on Gulf Shores beaches. This event will serve as the culminating fund raising event for the Memorial.

If you can’t make it to Gulf Shores to show your support, visit honorourmarines.org where you can make a donation and purchase “Warrior Night” tickets. You can also check out the MCAA McCutcheon Squadron Facebook page for more information.
