$25 Million, $2 at a Time

Escambia County Commission Chairman Wilson Robertson said he wasn’t sure how he felt about the proposed $25 million project at Pensacola beach. He’s hoping to have a better idea after tonight’s Santa Rosa Island Authority meeting.

“I want to sit up in the meeting and learn what’s going on first hand,” Robertson said.

The SRIA is considering the construction of an overpass for vehicular traffic on Via de Luna and Fort Pickens Road in order to better enable foot-traffic flow between the Portofino Boardwalk and Casino Beach.

The project has met some criticism from the public because it eliminates parking spaces and may require that the toll to cross over onto the beach is raised from its current $1 rate to $2.

The SRIA board—which is, except for one elected member, appointed by the county commission—will take up the issue tonight at 5 p.m.

Robertson said he understood the desire for the project, but also knew a $2 toll would be a tough sell.

“It may not sound like a lot—$2—but you’re still doubling it,” he said. “And to a lot of people that’s a lot.”
