Jefferson, an Information Systems Technician student at CID, was shot several times while jogging through a residential neighborhood not far from NAS Pensacola Corry Station in November 2009. Tragically, she was killed just one week before her scheduled graduation.
Jefferson, a native of Tyler, Texas, was only 18 when she signed up to serve her nation during
a time of war. She was a young woman with enormous potential and a life filled with endless
possibilities. On that cold November night two years ago, the Navy lost a Sailor, her mother
lost a daughter, and the nation lost one of its best and brightest. Her death continues to be
mourned while her killers remain free to roam our streets and neighborhoods.
It is for this reason that Jefferson’s command on board NAS Pensacola Corry Station is
hosting this 5K memorial run in her honor. Halfway through the run the participants will run or
walk past the corner where Jefferson was killed. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Tyler
Jefferson Memorial Fund to increase awareness and funding, hopefully leading to a conviction
in the two-year-old unsolved murder case.
The Tyler Jefferson Memorial 5K is a competitive Run/Walk event that is sanctioned by USA
Track and Field. It is being sponsored by the Pen Air Federal Credit Union, Corry Station
Chief Petty Officers Association, Navy Recruiting Orientation Unit, Escambia County Sheriff
Department, Navy League, Buffalo Rock, Wings N Things, The Coffee House, Bagel Heads,
Pete Moore, A & K, Running Wild and Gulf Coast Trophy’s.
Registration is available online on ACTIVE.COM until Nov. 3, 2011, for $25. Walk-in, late
and early-bird race day registration will be $30. T-shirts will be provided to registrants while
supplies last. All checks should be made out to “Tyler Jefferson Memorial Fund.”
