On Thursday, February 15, President Bush signed into law – H.J.Res. 20, which provides FY 2007 appropriations through September 30, 2007, for continuing projects and activities of the Federal Government.
It increases Section 8 funding by $502 million. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Except that Pensacola stands to LOSE about $3.7 million due to the reallocation. The problem is that the data used to reallocate is based on leasing figures from 2006, which are still low for us due to the lack of available rentals.
Dropped from $10.6 million to $6.9 million
What is Section 8 funding?
It is the Housing Choice Voucher Program and is the largest federal low-income housing assistance program. Families who are awarded vouchers use them to help pay the cost of renting housing on the open market. Because vouchers are provided to particular tenants to live where they choose, they are often referred to as “tenant-based” assistance. Vouchers can also be used to help families buy homes.
The impact on New Orleans is even bigger – from $73.6 million to $3.3 million, or more than $70 million during the 2007 budget year.
Nearby Jefferson Parish would see its allotment drop from $14.8 million to $2.8 million or more than $12 million, while St. Bernard Parish would be left with only $9 compared with $1.3 million it would have received under the previous formula.

I am seeing the pattern here. Despite polite calls and pleas for civilized intellectual discourse on this blog, people such as the above Anonymous persist in their old evil ways of deception and destruction.
Call us names, call them names, raise Cain and cause havoc, that is all very smart.
Shame on you.
Hold on Jason, let me get Heather so she can “worship at your feet”! Thats gotta be the funniest thing I,ve read on these blogs. I could give a rats butt whether Democrat is spelled with a capital D or a little d….todays Dems are pandering hypocrites far removed from the real Democrats that existed B4 the great society. The Dems are good at one thing & one thing only….spending money they steal from hard working Americans & squandering it on people who will not work & contribute anything to society but more little Democrats that wont work……are YOU beginning to see the pattern here..????
Hooray for W. Hoo!
The right wing has so vilified the term that most people refer to party politics as the Democrat this and the Democrat that. Democratic with a capitol D refers to the party, with a little d it refers to the general term and concept.
I remember hearing Rush Limbaugh years ago urging his ilk to start using Democrat instead of Democratic, as a less than sublte slap in the face.
DTS –
First of all, there is no such thing as a DEMOCRAT bill. A Democratic one, yes.
Second, PNJ originally reported on this 2/04/07. Pleanty of time to make a statement on this legislation… but nothing.
Still, nice to know his website won an award. Maybe he can add rental classified to it as a service to his constituants.
Actually, the Conservative-regressives have spent so much time running interference for Bush that they sort of forgot about the whole checks and balances concept. As a result, we’ve had many years of irresponsible government spending. It’s easy to run up the bill. The hard part is getting back in the black. Making Democrats out as the bad guys just because they’re tasked with fixing a budget that the “Conservatives” spent years wrecking is hardly fair.
Liberal progressives are their own worst enemies. They have hidden behind the blame Bush BS for so long they have lost their minds, those that had minds……
Did the Democratic Congress devise the funding formula or the Republican Administration?
Congress passed the budget. Bush signed it.
You can check out the vote at http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll072.xml
Looks like the Democrats are the real “Grinches”
To DTS:
‘He snarled and he slithered and he got mad quite a lot at the Whoos down in Whooville who were happy as a pot!’
Hoo,
You need to adjust your logic. First it was a DEMOCRAT bill that cut section 8 housing for pensacola. Second, Miller voted against the bill. Third, congrats to you liberal-voting chumps! You’re getting exactly what you asked for with Pelosi.
So the second poorest county in the state gets the highest cut in Section 8 funding, and just as some of the previously lost housing stock is returning to the market?
This was a House bill. Where was our illustrious Congressman on this issue? I’m sure he was far too busy defending Chimpy McFlightsuit’s wasting of trillions of dollars in tax cuts for the hyper rich and misguided war mongering to worry about a few measly million bucks for the folks back home to have a roof over their heads.
