No more Pensacola Beach

Portofino has renamed Santa Rosa Island – aka Pensacola Beach – Portofino Island in their latest sales mailers.

Come on, guys. After millions the SRIA has spent marketing Pensacola Beach over the past 40 years, Portofino scraps it all for their project.

So much for truth in advertising.

Can we rename Escambia County the McNesby fiefdom?

  2. PP says:

Great concept! Let Quint rename the city Studer, Florida (or Stud-a-cola but that looks like a male enhancement product) and his company can take over paying for repairs and upkeep!

    Jason’s right on.

  4. Jason says:

Fine with me…let them pay for all the repairs to the roads and beach-front next time a hurricane comes through and destroys “their” island.
Thanks Portofino for taking the burden off of the taxpayer.

  5. Joe says:

Has Westin corporate HQ taken over control of the Portofino’s marketing yet, or was this the brainchild of a local firm?

The mailer indicia says it was sent from Marietta, GA, but a WHOIS query of the website is traced to the Sandestin resort.

  6. InSantaRosa says:

I called to ask them “Where is Portofino Island, I can’t find it on the map.” I couldn’t get an operator on the line since they’re “experiencing a high volume of calls.”

That’s pretty ballsy to rename an entire island after condominium units!!!!!!!!! If you listen to the description of “the island” on the recorded message, it is misleading.

wait until we get 2 or 3 more resorts out there and implement an alcohol ban at Casino Beach…..

From the website’s About Us page:

“Welcome to Portofino Resort on beautiful Portofino Island”

Ya think they wanted positive publicity so they and had to drop the Pensacola part?

  12. Joe says:

It’s just crazy… First the Quietwater Boardwalk becomes the Portofino Boardwalk, and now this. “Just a 1 hour drive to our island from Mobile.” Pensacola Beach isn’t mentioned at all! And since when is Mobile the point of reference for the South?

Also: it’s a condo, not a “sky home.” And how many more modifiers can they tack on to “the ultimate luxury vacation rental family beach resort”?

  13. Jami says:

Hey I say we all call in for their offer and jam the phone lines!

I picked that up in an ad in Southern Living magazine a few months ago and thought it was very peculiar…and somewhat ballsy.
