Amendment 1 wins

During our election coverage on NewsRadio 1620 last night, I told co-host Marty Stanovich that I believed that if Amendment 1 got more than 68 percent of the vote in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Broward counties that it would pass. Those counties voted 684,125 to 294,482 for the property tax amendment – 69.9% Yes. Palm Beach County voted Yes:232,052 to No:96,321 – 70.7% Yes.

Looks like local governments will go on diets.

duh…why didn’t I think of casinos…let’s do just like everyone else along the gulf coast…I have been under the impression P’cola wants to stand out and be different…casinos have a dark side that no one seems to want to recognize…and yes I have visited, and left feeling, if I could’ve rolled just one more time…the old adage, “out of sight, out mind” come to mind…Biloxi–far away, casinos here–not so far away, maybe distance is a leash on some who would have no such restraint if casinos were so easily accesible…the ripple effect is what concerns alot of citizens around here…why is everyone so scared of a local or state income tax…intiate it and then decrease the property tax, get rid of all these “assessments”, aka TAXES…and see what happens…Commisioner Valentino, I applaud you for your efforts in attempting to bring some real revenue for the economy…I was but a wee pup back when Willy, and all the others were in office, and refused to give a tax break to get big business to Escambia county…now I am sowing those seeds of a lacking county…you think we have alot of unemployed, poverty level citizens who rely on gov’t programs to survive, wait till the casinos have a foot hold…Bruce..I like your angle…

We already have the lottery, which is one tax on the mathematically challenged. Casinos would fit right in, and would allow the upper income class to continue to escape a state income tax while those making under $100,000 can effectively double their contributions to the state. Good Time Tours already sends loads of buses to Biloxi. Just think how many more citizens would line up if we had the casinos here. The house always win, so why not government too? But why stop at casinos? What’s wrong with video poker at restaurants like they have in Louisiana? And why should only Nevada have all those betting sites? Gambling is good for government, so it must be good for us.

  3. NO THANK YOU says:

No Thank you to any genius who wants to propose a state income tax for Florida. NO Thank YOU!

How about we grow up and into the 21st century and look to liberalizing our rules on casino gambling? The revenue these casinos would generate could more that offset any budget shortfall that Ammendment 1 creates, would stifle the need to consider a state income tax, would generate jobs, add to the property tax rolls, stimulate tourism, etc. etc. etc. South Florida already has them, (Indian cainos) so why not us?

…And I’m not going to hear about the moral objection theory–many locally who are most opposed are the ones who’s cars line the parking lots of the Biloxi casino car-parks! If you are morally opposed to gambling then don’t go—but don’t propose a state income tax when there is a better, less obtrusive alternative (Legalize Casino Gambling).

sorry, the four letter word in the first post is the safe word for poop…not the dreaded “s” word…

assess this…how about providing those things that make people want to stay here when they finish school, move here because we have a wonderful public service attitude…provide for the common man and they will spend their money in our town…would you go to a restaurant where they only pick up the plates only at the top of the hour, would you go to a retail store and have to wait on the next available clerk to assist you, oh never mind that’s walmart on fri night after 8:00…, take care of the public, not spoon feed them, and they will take of you… any comments, thoughts, ideas good or bad..I would love to talk and be more educated if I appear ignorant…

great amendment 1 passed…yippeee I get to save a whole “$240″ this year. I can fill up the mini van at least 6 times…maybe…I would like to see a demographic of the age group in the counties that voted no. I wonder how many were 60 and above…Crist and all other politicos did a good job by scaring everyone into thinking they were gonna go broke by paying their property taxes…lets take a look at what gets cut first…senior services, health services, public services, parks and recreation…hmmm, who do you think uses many of these…you guessed it…the services cut first are the ones that don’t help or don’t generate enough revenue to legitamize their existence…the citizens of Florida got fed just what they wanted to eat…a bunch of ****…I voted for Crist and don’t regret it…yet…let’s explore a state tax and then lower property taxes that way…w/ a state tax EVERYBODY gets to share, not just those of us fortunate enough to be gainfully employed and live in a home…a state tax would get..follow me here…the home owner, the renter, the landlord, the police man, the fireman, the illegal working in your garden, the pimp, the prostitute, the tourist looking for any of these things, the passer through from the neighboring counties…ANYONE who uses or buys good and services would shar the wealth…you get the picture…I hope someone with more influence than me gets the vision and can see it through…i know there may be detalis, but they can be worked out…this is just one man’s opinion…

  7. More taxes new name says:

No new taxes just some very special assessments coming our way.

We already have a new stormwater assessment, now council wants to add a city fire assessment.

What next? a police assessment, park assessment, theatre assessment, road assessment and sidewalk /streetlight assessment.

    Any others needed ?

Lets just hope that Escambia county does not come out now and reappraise my property so they can raise my value to squeeze money out that way

Creative Loafing, slanted? That’s an understatement. I’m pretty sure Che Guevara is their managing editor. Or is that Rue Paul? I forget.

  10. gb silver foxx says:

If I remember right when I lived in Atlanta Creative Loafing was a liberal alturnitive lifestyle paper.THey did have a great entertainment section. However there ed/op page was slanted to the left.

  11. [...] blog picked up my analysis on Amendment 1. The link is to my blog. The tax amendment won in South Florida; stunning, really, given the Democratic nature of Broward, you would have thought that the union [...]

Let’s just hope our lackluster leaders cut the bloat from the budget and not critical services like they keep threatening.

  13. gb silver foxx says:

GLAD THIS ONE WON. our elected officals have too long used our tax monies to pander votes with, it is time we quit paying for some of these useless county projects.
