Voter Breakdown by Council District

District Yes %
Wu: 55%
Hall: 53%
DeWeese: 62%
Johnson: 61%
Jerralds: 43%
Cannada-Wynn: 54%
Townsend: 47%

Sam Hall, Maren DeWeese, Larry Johnson and Diane Mack came out big for the charter. Their influence and impact on the voters is evident, especially DeWeese and Johnson.

On the other hand, P.C. Wu is in trouble politically. He made automated phone calls and was quoted on the No Boss Mayor flyer and still his district went 55 percent in favor of the Charter. The last time we saw this a big a gap between a council member and his district was Marty Donovan in 2006 CMP Referendum who saw his district vote 59 percent for the park. Donovan had no opposition in the 2006 City election, but was soundly beat in 2008.

Jewel Cannada-Wynn may not quite have the same issue. She, Jerralds, Townsend and Commissioner Marie Young opposed the charter, yet they couldn’t marshall a significant percentage of NO votes to defeat the charter. None of them could get 60 percent or more of their districts to vote No. In the CMP vote, those districts went 61.4 percent in favor of the park, with the council members’ support.

The African-American community doesn’t like to challenge its politicians, but all four of these are vulnerable.

And as for the black vote, I disagree with Rick. Most of the voters in the black community only vote when there is a major election, like president, local black politicians up for re-election, stuff like that, and even then, it’s usually the middle aged and elderly. Young black voters rarely vote. I know quite a few that are in their 30s, yet last November was the first time most of them ever voted, and the only reason they voted then was to elect Obama.

Psu1earl, do you really think Derrick would be interested in living in this town full time?? First of all, I don’t think the good ole boy network in Pensacola would ever go along with a black man being mayor, even someone who might be overqualified like Brooks. Second, the guy lives in Tampa. I don’t think I’d be interested in moving back to slow Pensacola if I were him. Nice idea, but zero chance it happens. If anything, I wouldn’t be surprised if he runs for office in Tampa one day, rather than here.

We need a strong leader now…So, just to throw a name out there…what is Derrick Brooks doing in a year or two?…He is definitely qualified, his name is well known in all communities, and he is by all accounts a strong leader…He is a great roll model and very well educated…Brooks originally graduated from FSU with a Bachelor’s degree in business communications before adding his Master’s in the same subject in 1999. In the summer of 2006, Derrick also received his Doctorate in Humane Letters from St. Leo’s University…

City Managers self-dealing in the shadows is OVER. The trend is now alive and growing against them like a snowball. Goodbye CROOKS!
This form of governing by nature of design, breeds corruption because of a strange confluence of factors including the wonderful thing we call “Sunshine Laws” which prevent any discussion except through the city manager. You see city managers are by circumstance the ultimate insider deal-makers nowadays because of some strange unrelated factors. Public officials can’t talk to each other, but who do they relay all information through? That’s right, your friendly city managers who can and do influence ALL DECISIONS before the vote by injecting whatever version of the situation they like, and it’s all perfectly legal, sort-of.
But not for much longer hopefully.
FYI; It does violate the spirit of the “Sunshine Laws”, but not clear enough to make a legal difference.

It is time for the young black community leaders to come to the front of the bus. For too long, the old Black Leaders went along to get long,,,that time is over. Power comes with those whom wish to go against the statusque. Far too long the voters in the Black Community have been taking advantage of by the power elite. Few jobs here, a few crumbs there, and be thankfully for what you got. We Shall Over Come..that time has come. Respectfully asking the go along crowd to retire, and let young men like the May brothers (Lumon & LuTim)the freedom and your support to be the next representatives of the Black Community.

P.C. Wu needs to go! Not only did he want to hang on to the form of government that was not working but he also was a big supporter of the worst land deal our tax payers have seen in years- Innsfree. He let them rob us.
