Reuben Askew hospitalized

According to the Miami Herald, former Florida Gov. Reubin Askew is back in the hospital with family members close by his side. He has battled in recent months pneumonia and hip replacement surgery.

In 1955, Askew co-founded with David Levin the Pensacola law firm Levin & Askew–the predecessor to today’s Levin Papantonio law firm.

Askew, 85, was one of the most popular and effective governors in Florida history. From 1971 to 1979, the Democrat from Pensacola directed an an ambitious legislative agenda, including passage of stronger ethics laws, merit retention for judges, the state’s first corporate profits tax and creation of regional water management districts. He also guided the state through a period of explosive population growth and school desegregation and in 1978, his last year in office, he led a statewide crusade to prevent casino gambling in South Florida.

    My uncle is a great, great man and one of the most admirable of not only his generation but of any leader America has seen. He is truly Pensacola and Florida’s crown treasure. We’re all sad to hear of his condition, but he has led a truly spectacular and inspirational life.
