Beach Horror Story

February 4, 2011

On Saturday, Feb. 5, there will be two events requiring the parking lots on Pensacola Beach. The Double Bridge Run will send 3,000 runners from downtown Pensacola through Gulf Breeze and on to Pensacola Beach. They will be greeted by over a hundred friends and families, groupies, and gawkers. Parking at the Portofino Boardwalk can’t inadequately handle the vehicles associated with the run and cars will spill over into the Casino Beach parking lot.

The Krewe of Nauga Pajama Party and Champagne Breakfast will occur on the same day at 10:30 a.m. at The Dock on Casino Beach. Last year the Mardi Gras event had 700 people paying at the door. Most of the attendees will come from Pensacola and Gulf Breeze.

Oh, the humanity! How can the beach cope with two events using the same parking lots at the same time????

Of course, the answer is to cancel the Double Bridge Run. Mardi Gras has been on Pensacola Beach much longer than the run. Or maybe the SRIA should force the Double Bridge Run to pay for the party.

What a horrible, horrible situation! How can the beach handle these two events on the same day?

Rick, I don’t believe this is analogous to the Deluna issue. If one of the two events was taking up the entire parking lot at Quietwater and the parade route needed to run through the parking lot three times maybe this post would have more validity. But,that isn’t the case. Both events start and finish in different locations at different times of the day. Otherwise, you would have heard the same argument from PSA about the change of date from the parade.

      Lighten up.

Who turned their completed paperwork in first? Did one event offer to “buy out” the other? Perhaps the Double Bridge Run should move to downtown Pensacola.

Rick, you can certainly bring a smile to our faces!

Rick, it is so not like you to use a DOUBLE NEGATIVE
Parking at the Portofino Boardwalk can’t inadequately handle the vehicles…..
    Other then that, great story.

Seriously that is a funny analogy; thanks for the laugh!!

The Double Bridge Run SHOULD pay at least for the extra police presence required while in Pensacola, Gulf Breeze and Pensacola Beach.
As well as any event that creates the same need.

    Oh and “inadequately” ??

      Brian,
Double Bridge Run pays for extra police.

Everything’s fine, Rick. We just received word that Charles Gheen and the SRI Triathlon has cancelled Mardi Gras this year. The beach can now return to normal.

  • Courtney Peterson February 4, 2011 at 9:43 am

Which one of these events takes over the entire casino beach parking lot and the beach with their equipment not leaving enough space for the other event to occur safely and moved their date without any consideration for the other’s?

    • Rick Outzen February 4, 2011 at 9:54 am

The party moved its date—Mardi Gras changes every year. Last year it was Jan. 23. The Double Bridge Run takes up much, but not all of two bridges–huge safety issue, filled with potential accidents. The run has buses all over the place moving runners to and fro. This is so horrible. I can’t fathom how the SRIA let this slip by.
