BP Boycotts forming

May 22, 2010

I haven’t heard any more about Michael O’Donovan’s possible boycott of BP. There are national campaigns that have started:

Boycott BP Gas Stations

1,000,000 Strong to Boycott BP is on Facebook

BP gas stations in this country are almost exclusively franchise operations. All of the stations in the Pensacola area are franchises. Thanks to my buddy Rick Harper for tracking down that info.

A franchise works like this, a local owner puts up money and buys the right to sell under the brand name, usually with a lot of restrictions and rules regarding pricing, branding, signs and general appearance. He also pays a percentage of his sales directly to the parent company.

So, a boycott of local stations will in fact take money away from BP but it will also take away money from the local owner. Personally, I have never bought gas from a BP station since they tend to have the higest prices in town. If you feel guilty about the gas boycott I suggest you buy other things from the locals, all of the stations have an attached store and I’m pretty sure BP doesn’t get a penny from the sale of coffee, honey buns or Coke Zero.

What’s the point of boycotting a BP gas station? I’m just asking. Doesn’t it just hurt the local businessman? I could see it if the stations were owned by corporate. Are they?

We do not have BP stations here in this part of Louisiana. It will not be hard for me to boycott BP. This retailer joins the other brand I do not purchase – CITGO – the national oil company of Venezuela – I will drive by a CITGO station with lower prices to another major retailer due to Hugo Chavez’s inane and asinine behavior in the world body politick.

Does your outrage extend beyond your computer screen? I invite those of you in Pensacola to join me on May 30th from 11:00am to 1:00pm at the BP on Palafox and Cervantes. I will also be at the BP on 9th & Cervantes from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. The manager of this store stands with BP, not us. Take a stand for your community. http://www.facebook.com/pages/manage/#!/pages/Boycott-BP/119321854760965
