Breaking news: Jail medical director put on administrative leave

Jail Bars
The Independent News learned yesterday that the medical director for the Escambia County Jail, David Benoit, was put on administrative leave. Commissioner Lumon May confirmed the rumor last night. May said that he had been told late Monday afternoon by incoming County Administrator Jack Brown about the decision, but the commissioner did not know the specific reasons for the administrative leave.

  1. TC says:

He supposedly misinformed his superiors regarding the medical care for inmates.

  2. jeeperman says:

He DOES have a say if his actions were to block or hinder medical care.
Sounds like Benoit and Pike were ignoring what Newsome was instructing them to do.

  3. Ic nope says:

A Medical director is not a doctor his is only an administer. He had no say in the medicine given to patients or them being released from medical care.

  4. steve says:

Someone currently employed by the county, perhaps Larry newsome put the director on leave, that would make sense.

  5. steve says:

So the incoming county administrator who begins his job next Monday told commish May about the decision to put the jail medical director on leave. this means the man who hasn’t begun his job yet put someone on leave and one of the men he reports to, Commish May, Chairman May, didn’t have the details on why. But he, Commish May is ok with a future employee, who reports to him, putting a current employee on admin leave, supposedly without explanation or “justification”.
Still, hats off to Commish May for being on top of this nightmare but does this series of events make sense to anyone?

Jack Brown officially starts next Monday.

  7. billybob says:

Absolutely someone knows, but he possibility exists that what they know they cannot speak due to HIPA reasons.
Its not like they didnt know about the last Interm County Administrator but couldn’t speak due to HIPA. That wasn’t a big secret.

  8. jeeperman says:

So is Mr. Brown technically now the County Admin. or not?
If your still “incoming”, why would you be directing personnel matters before your actually on the job?

I’m wondering if the beginning of heads rolling has started or is he a scape goat ,was he following orders or had his own agenda, was he the one who gave orders to give alias names to the hospital staffs of the injured ,are these questions even going to be answered ,was it his decision to hold inmates for 17 hours to give them a,asprin and release them from medical i know my son was released from medical way too soon .
