Buzz: Sheriff Morgan gives jail back to the county

June 13, 2013

We are hearing that Escambia County Sheriff David Morgan has drafted a letter returning the county jail to the Board of County Commissioners. The sentiment at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office is Commissioner Gene Valentino and interim County Administrator George Touart haven’t negotiated in good faith and have intended to privatize the facility all along.

Letters to the Board of County Commissioners and the U.S. Department of Justice may go as early as this afternoon.

I am originally from Texas and I recall way back in the early 1990’s the Justice Dept. gave many warnings and then filed suit against the State of Texas Dept. of Corrections for some of the same reasons as the Escambia County Jail. The amount the state had to pay was in the HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS. If they had just fixed the issues outlined in the beginning, it would not have burned the taxpayers 1/10th as much. I would guess that the BOCC just doesn’t think the Justice Dept. is very serious and Sheriff Morgan knows darn well where that road leads. Good for him.

Gov. Scott wants to Privatize all state prison for profit…since the Gov., Gene and Mayor Hayward are Tea Party supporters of less Government, beware if the Jail to private. Under George and Ronnie Mack, the Medical/Mental Health was Private run by “ Prison Health Service”. .Results— numerous law suits and many deaths…I know, three medical malpraictes suites against me…I was found not guilty, but Ronnie had to pay off the family of the victim’s big time$$$…Currently, medical/mental are doing a great job…FYI..I left before Morgan took over…

You go Sheriff! The county will be under a court order before king George can hire all his cronies to make all they can off the jail.
