He Was Right: Beer does make him smarter!

A study by the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences shows that alcohol enhances creative problem solving by reducing our ability to focus our attention on something.  Apparently alcohol diminishes working memory capacity or, English,  the ability to control one’s attention,”According to  Cognitive psychologist Jennifer Wiley, a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “It’s the ability to remember one thing while you’re thinking about something else.”

The study also found that groups whose members possess diverse skill levels; that is, varying levels of mastery or expertise, may be more likely to come up with the best ideas or,  “great things,” as they put , groups of three work better than groups of two and it really DOES help to sleep on a problem.     Well, I hate to admit it but in college when I got really stressed about an exam I would take a shot of booze about an hour before the test and I would invariably get a very high score. I was convinced I could think better and solve problems more easily because my over heated brain was slowed down just enough so that I could tune out distractions.

    I do not recommend this method to students but it surely seemed to work for me. I’m glad to find out that there was some science at work and not just my fondness for booze!
