Escambia County is currently dealing with a fire at the Cove Landfill. The incident has been ongoing for the past few days.
“It is on fire, it is not under control as of this morning,” Interim County Administrator George Touart informed county commissioners this morning.
According to an update provided by the county, there “are no open flames, however, there is quite a bit of smoke.” Due to public safety concerns, the Solid Waste Department has been asked to bring out heavy equipment in an effort to “get the issue under control by this afternoon.”
The landfill fire is located near Pine Meadow Elementary School. Children have been relocated from a portable classroom to the main building. The school is not closing, though officials “have discussed how to keep the smoke away from the children.”
