Lakeview Center’s annual fundraiser, “Run for Their Lives,” is a 5k run/walk race that won’t slow down. Now it its fifth year, the race is held in April in recognition of Sexual Violence Awareness Month.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than 1.3 million women are forcibly raped in the United States during a single year. One in six men experience sexual abuse before age 18, and one in six women report being raped at some point in their lives.
Funds raised for Lakeview help provide victims with the help they need to reach recovery. Lakeview Center provides counseling to trauma survivors, crisis intervention for victims of sexual violence, and in-person support for rape victims during sensitive medical and legal procedures. Lakeview also has a 24-hour rape crisis hotline (433-7273).
The race will be upbeat and optimistic despite the grave message. There will be a post-race party featuring music by James Adkins and Rewind. There will also be food, door prizes and an awards ceremony for both run and walk divisions. The first 300 to register receive a long-sleeved event t-shirt.
