B.T. Washington High Class of 1987 Honors Sherman L. Robinson
It took many years, but the B.T. Washington High School Class of 1987 made good on a promise to honor the late Sherman L. Robinson who served as principal from 1979 through 1988.
Recently, the City of Pensacola installed signs in front of the College Parkway school that state, “Sherman L. Robinson Way designated by B.T. Washington High Class of 1987, Pensacola City Council.” Since so many businesses and residences have populated the area, College Parkway’s name was not changed.
“When we met for our 20 year reunion, we realized that the class project was never completed,” said class member David Peaden who spearheaded the project. “Our class president, Reginald Parker, asked me complete this task on behalf of my classmates to fulfill our commitment to Mr. Robinson. Mr. Robinson ran a tight ship as principal, and he was a tremendous leader, friend and mentor to countless students.”
Prior to becoming principal, Robinson was an educator for more than 20 years as a teacher, coach and athletic director. He was appointed assistant superintendent in 1988 and then deputy superintendent from 1993 until 1996. In 1997, he joined the distinguished list of leaders selected as Pensacola Citizen of the Year by the Pensacola Civitan Club for his lifetime of service as an educator, and as an involved community leader whose contributions had improved life for others.
The signs were donated by Sid Farish, Jr. of Advanced Signs and Graphics, and Peaden said it was a timely process working through the City of Pensacola and the Florida Department of Transportation guidelines to meet sign specifications.
