350 Pensacola hosts “Protecting Florida’s Future: The Water and Land Conservation Amendment,†a talk by Marcus Lackey, on Tuesday, October 14. The Water and Land Conservation Amendment is on Florida’s November 4 election ballot, offering voters the chance to protect their drinking water and the forests, beaches, and water bodies that make Florida unique. If passed, Amendment 1 will set up a 20-year source of funding for water and land conservation; importantly, this will not raise taxes for Floridians. But this can only happen if 60% of those voting in Florida on November 4 vote “yes” on Amendment 1.
Preserving open space and creating new state parks and forests has proven to be very popular among Floridians. The people of Florida once enjoyed the benefits of the nation’s most comprehensive land conservation program, as the State purchased and protected millions of acres of Florida in parks and forestlands. In recent years the State’s land conservation efforts have been virtually non-existent, putting Florida farther behind as a growing population continues to gobble up open space.
Participants will learn more about Amendment 1 and how they can help spread the word about the importance of its passage.
Marcus Lackey lives in Pensacola and serves as a Volunteer Coordinator for Florida’s Water and Land Legacy. Marcus has served in the U.S. Navy and worked in the commercial real estate industry. He earned a BA from Georgetown University and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania.
