The Florida TaxWatch Center for Local Government Studies will release the results of their  analysis of Escambia County government, Improving Transparency and Accountability in Escambia County Government, today at a press conference here in Pensacola. The study, which was requested and funded by a group of Escambia County citizens who were concerned about escalating property taxes and the growing cost of county government, finds that revenue and spending increases since 2000 are “unsustainable.†I will talk with Harvey Bennett,  Florida Taxwatch’s Sr. Vice President for Marketing about that report.
 In March, we did a story on IN Your Head Radio about guestworkers from India, lured by false promises of permanent U.S. residency, who paid tens of thousands of dollars each to obtain temporary jobs at Gulf Coast shipyards only to find themselves forced into involuntary servitude and living in overcrowded, guarded labor camps. Some of these workers, seeking action against Signal International,  Staged a hunger strike, which concluded on June 11 after 29 days with a rally in front of the US Justice Department.The  New Orleans Workers’ Centre for Racial Justice, which is supporting the strikers, said they suspended their hunger strike after an unprecedented outpouring of support from US Congressmen and leaders from labour, civil rights, and religious communities.
