Pinellas County School District has announced a plan to improve the education that its African-American students receive
On Monday, the U.S. Department of Education said it would launch a civil rights investigation into whether the Pinellas County School District systematically discriminates against black children.
The School District’s plan, which the Superintendent will present to his school board next week, calls for:
1. Hiring a minority achievement officer,
2. Creating special centers for students suspended out of school, and
3. Establishing a “transformation zone” with intense support for Pinellas’ failing elementary schools. That support will include paying teachers up to $25,000 more a year, a longer school day and more control over the curriculum and schedule.
