The Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament rolled into Pensacola Bay Center this week, and if Day 2 was any indication, this city is ready for the national spotlight. I sat down with Pensacola Sports CEO Ray Palmer — decked out in his tournament whites — to talk hoops, highlight the community impact, and yes, address the brawl that briefly turned a basketball game into something resembling a hockey fight.
The Fight Heard ‘Round the Sunbelt
It didn’t take long for the tournament to make headlines. A tussle during the South Alabama women’s game had people talking across the sports world — at least until the news of Lou Holtz’s passing took over the cycle.
- “We were pretty strong in the headlines of the sports world yesterday for a couple hours,” Palmer said with a laugh.
To be clear, the basketball itself was outstanding. “The intensity of the game yesterday, the athleticism was phenomenal,” Palmer noted. “And then we had the tussle. But the basketball is still great.”
I joked that “we had a basketball game and it broke into a hockey game,” but both agreed the real story is the caliber of competition on display — and the stakes couldn’t be higher for these athletes. One loss and your season is over.
The Competition Only Gets Stiffer
Day 2 brings the seven and eight seeds into action on both the men’s and women’s sides, with Southern Miss squads set to draw strong crowds from nearby Hattiesburg. Meanwhile, South Alabama returns — but without their three top scorers, who are suspended following yesterday’s altercation.
- “They’re on a run, but they got their work cut out for them this morning,” Palmer said.
Games tip off at 11:30 a.m. and resume around 5:30 p.m., with pep bands, fan contests during timeouts, and Sun Belt merchandise adding to the atmosphere. Walk-up tickets are available at the Bay Center box office.
700 Escambia Kids Get a College Experience
Perhaps the most meaningful moment of the tournament has nothing to do with the scoreboard. On Thursday, 700 Escambia High School students are attending an education day at the Bay Center, where they’ll be fed, entertained, and exposed to all 14 Sun Belt Conference institutions.
- “It again shows the Sun Belt Conference’s commitment to our community,” Palmer said. Schools like Troy, James Madison, Old Dominion, and Marshall will be represented, giving local students a rare opportunity to explore options and pathways beyond Pensacola.
A Winning Partnership for Pensacola
From the Escambia County Commission investing in the facility to Pensacola Sports landing the event, this tournament represents exactly the kind of community-wide effort this city is capable of. The games get better every round, the crowds are building, and Pensacola is proving it can host major college athletics at the highest level.
- As Palmer put it simply: “I hope everybody in Pensacola will come join us.”
Tickets are available at the door. Don’t miss it.
