Press Release: Former Blue Wahoos infielder Mike Costanzo was called up to the Major Leagues on Saturday afternoon by the Cincinnati Reds and becomes the first Pensacola player to make it to the Big League level.
The 28-year-old began the year with the Blue Wahoos and hit .333 in 11 games, leading the Southern League with three home runs and 13 RBI at the time of his transfer to Triple-A Louisville on April 17. In 23 games with the Bats, he accumulated a .291 average, adding three longballs and 11 RBI.
When he plays, Costanzo will make his Major League debut, and is expected to be in uniform for Saturday evening’s game against the Washington Nationals. Coming into this season, the infielder had compiled a .253 average with 90 home runs and 430 RBI in 770 total Minor League contests.
Pensacola is currently in the midst of a five-game homestand with the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, with game two set for tonight at 6:30 pm from Pensacola’s multi-use stadium. The Blue Wahoos announced earlier today that all tickets had been sold for Saturday evening’s contest, which would mark the 12th sellout crowd in 16 home dates.
