Starting this week, kindergarten and first-graders in Florida will be the first to be taught under new standards intended to better prepare students for college and careers.
Florida has voluntarily adopted the Common Core State Standards, which were launched by the National Governors Association in 2009.
Over the next three years, the state will introduce the new standards to every grade level.
The Sarasota Herald-Tribune published some examples of skills students will be expected to develop:
KINDERGARTEN
• With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
• Identify characters, settings, and major events in a story.
• Solve addition and subtraction word problems, and add and subtract within 10; also use objects or drawings to represent the math problem.
SIXTH GRADE
• Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (for example, between stories and poems, or historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches to similar themes and topics.
• Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment (for example, Auden’s “Musée des Beaux Arts†and Breughel’s “Landscape with the Fall of Icarusâ€).
12TH GRADE
• Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama, such as where a story is set, how the action is ordered, and how the characters are introduced and developed.
• Demonstrate knowledge of 18th-, 19th- and early 20th-century foundational works of American literature, including how two or more texts from the same period treat similar themes or topics.
• Construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems*
Note: Math standards apply to all high-school grades.
