Statement from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office

In the wake of Wednesday’s devastating incident at the Escambia County Jail, the Escambia Sheriff’s Office has been inundated with multiple media inquiries from both local and National news outlets seeking information pertaining to the incident.

For the purpose of clarification, the ECSO is willing to assist with federal investigators pursuant to their request; however, the ECSO has only a limited, supporting role and is NOT the lead agency. To avoid being perceived as the lead agency it is important that citizens realize that the information relayed by Sheriff Morgan was provided without independent verification by the ECSO.

Therefore, to ensure the accuracy of the information being relayed to the media and citizens, it will only be released by appropriate agencies:

– Medical Examiner – determination of cause of death for the inmates 850.416.7240
