Press release: Episcopal Day School of Christ Church Parish (EDS) in Pensacola, FL will commemorate International Peace Day on Monday, September 21 through the creation of a Pinwheels for Peace art installation project on the K-8 Campus. EDS is an inclusive independent school in downtown Pensacola embracing and welcoming students of all faiths and backgrounds.
International Peace Day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1981, and it calls for a worldwide cease fire and a halt to hostilities. EDS students will honor the day with an exploration of the ideal of peace and its importance by participating in the Pinwheels for Peace Project.
Pinwheels will be made by students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, and they will include their messages of peace. Throughout the day, pinwheels will be placed by students in the courtyard of the EDS campus. EDS engages students in learning opportunities to encourage global perspectives and connections.
The Pinwheels for Peace Project began in 2005 when art teachers Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan conceived it as an art installation project for students at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, FL. The pinwheels were a symbol of childhood as well as a means of expression for their feelings about living in a world without violence.
