Pensacola City Council President Charles Bare will be my guest in the second half-hour of “Pensacola Speaks.” We will discuss the timeline on how The Satanic Temple of West Florida was scheduled to do the invocation at the July council meeting, and why he called a special meeting on the invocation scheduling process.
The issue is the First Amendment. If any church gives the invocation at a council meeting, then all churches have to be allowed to give an invocation at a council meeting.
The council invocations are not the only place where the city is facing a First Amendment challenge. The American Humanist Association’s Appignani Humanist Legal Center and the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) are suing the City of Pensacola to challenge the Christian cross in Bayview Park.
