DC “Captain America” Reeves spent $16,457 in the final weeks of the primary, significantly more than his opponents – Steve Sharp -$4,544; Jewel Cannada-Wynn – $612; and Sherri Myers -$321.
Reeves has guaranteed his supporter that he will the election without a runoff, adding more interest to the race.
Possible but a bit hard to imagine that DC Reeves will win outright. Imagine if he finishes second, or third! Nobody with whom I have spoken, to include those who have told me how they voted, voted for him. I’m sure that some people who long to have their children or grandchildren give up their successful careers in Atlanta, Charlotte and Dallas and move back home will like his pitch which is mostly that the city is supposedly a bad place to live now but if elected he’ll make it safe for the kids to come home – “He alone can fix it.” My sense of it is that people who have been here a while, and know the score, and have some skin in the game, are mostly voting for Sherri Myers or Steve Sharp. Reeves’ recent roots in the city are shallow. After college, Reeves did work for several years at the PNJ but did “not” live in the city. He then moved back to Tallahassee and then to Tuscaloosa. Voter registration records show that as recently as July 2016, Reeves was supposedly living in Tuscaloosa but registered to vote in Tallahassee where he had not lived in years. Odd. He then left Tuscaloosa and moved to East Hill and became a City of Pensacola voter on December 6, 2016. Reeves has said that he is going to continue owning his bar if elected mayor so that’s a major concern. Reeves is definitely not a “man of the people” and is all about downtown, downtown and downtown. The downtown home that Reeves got after he split from his very successful wife (2010 to 2020) just went up for sale on August 17 for $609,900. His new October 2021 fantabulous downtown home that reminds me a bit of “Hayward House” is supposedly worth $1,078,200. Reeves’ campaign is noteworthy for him having donated exactly nothing ($0) to his own campaign that has raised $300,949 and spent $287,948 as of August 18. By law, city elections must be conducted “on a nonpartisan basis.” But even “before” Reeves became a candidate, his brother and Dan Zimmern set up a two-person political action committee called “Citizens for Pensacola.” The address of the registered agent (his brother, a New Orleans attorney) is their father’s law office. I assume that DC Reeves was in on it. In the PAC’s legal statement of organization, DC Reeves (listed as a Republican) is described as the only candidate that the PAC is supporting. DC Reeves’ address on that form is his Studer Community Institute office. Does Mr. Studer know that? The PAC has so far raised $48,775 and “reported” expenditures of $7,905 to date to include a $5,410 bash at the Pensacola Country Club on June 27 at which I assume DC Reeves was present. The PAC has reported a $1,000 donation to Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and a $1,000 donation to Republican State Representative Jay Trumbull. On July 18, the PAC made a $1,000 donation to DC Reeves but has “not” reported it yet on four campaign finance reports.
Rick, Really? DC Reeves “Captain Anerica” with disarming photo. How much did he pay for that? I’m appalled.
