Childers a victim of Florida election laws?

The Pensacola News Journal no longer writes editorials but has a regular rotation of unpaid writers who do it for them. On Saturday, Theresa Blackwell, who averages one PNJ viewpoint monthly, delivered her detailed analysis of District 1 and District 5 county commission races – Who can we trust when we vote for District 1 and District 5 commissioners?

Then, on Sunday, Bruce Higdon cried foul when Bruce Childers, husband of County Clerk Pam Childers, was disqualified from running against Supervisor of Elections Robert Bender.

  • Higdon blamed Bender and his staff and the “somewhat complex qualification process.” He repeats Pam and Bruce’s narrative, which was disproved by the video shown during the emergency hearing and the staff’s testimonies. An independent judge found the staff and the video “more compelling” and ruled against Childers.

Higdon can’t explain why Bruce Childers, “a recently retired, well-respected attorney who practiced in Escambia County for nearly 40 years,” and Pam Childers, a three-term elected official, could not figure out how to file Bruce’s Full & Public Disclosure form (Form 6) while hundreds of other Florida candidates did it without a problem.

He also wrote, “It should be noted that the county’s cost for legal fees to back up their disqualification is $50,000!”

  1. I would rather she spend our tax dollars to stop the illegal 401a than continue to payout for bogus lawsuits brought on by the BOCC. Commissioners decided they wanted a war.

  2. At some point, it must be remembered, that as we look at this election, people are responding to my vision for ECUA but also that when State Senate President Childers got the bill through to create ECUA, the districts were not conterminous with County Commission districts, they never were through 2001, it was once a 7 member board, but it must also be remembered, that the County Commission draws districts for school board, they draw districts for commission, there are those who want a charter, without a charter a county can have 5 or 7 districts, ultimately the interests of those who complied with election law, and this I remind everyone as a great-grandson of Connie Bea Hope and remind everyone that when General Lafayette came to the Gulf Coast in the 1820s, he stayed at the inn of my ancestor Louis DeMouy, the building later became the Old Register Building, I imagine in part due to the DeMouy-Rapier marriage.

As an Italian-American, I have always been a fan of Fellini’s work, though Fall of the Roman Empire (1964) remains a favorite movie of mine, as you get to see Sophia Loren in a more serious acting role and I would point out a to original detail replica of the Roman Forum circa 180 was built as the set, this also occurred in other Bronston movies like 55 Days at Peking.

My grandma Lorraine continued visiting her aunt Edwina into her old age, when she lived in that apartment building run by the church in downtown Mobile.

People who have old footage of the Connie Bea and Estelle show, we need this up on YouTube, they have old Dot Moore episodes on YouTube, therefore, old Connie Bea and Estelle episodes are needed as well.

  3. Bruce brings up a great point. It cost the county $50,000 to defend the Supervisor of Elections’ office against the Childers’ failed lawsuit. Because the Childers could not and would not admit the failure to properly qualify for the chance to run as Supervisor of Elections was their fault, it cost the county $50,000. Anyone trying to place the blame on the county and the supervisor’s office for that cost is once again deflecting responsibility.
