A high school incident involving AI-generated fake nude photos has highlighted legal gaps regarding AI image manipulation. After discovering altered photos of herself and 13 other female students, Lucy Adams Stevenson and her peers reported it to the police.
The 18-year-old male creator wasn’t charged because he apparently didn’t distribute the photos. The 17-year-old female student who made a video of the photos and later circulated the images to 17 students faces felony charges for sharing altered sexual depictions without consent.
The case revealed that Florida’s current laws only address distribution, not creation, of such content. Lucy Adams and her parents, Eric and Carrie Stevenson, are advocating for legislative updates to address advancing AI technology.
The Stevensons sat down with me after the holidays and discussed the incident and their campaign to change the laws regarding the smartphone apps that created such fake images without the consent of the victim, particularly when the victims are minors.
Here is a podcast of the conversation. The complete story will be published in the Jan. 16 issue of Inweekly.
