From July 28 to August 1, City Sanitation picked up 24,000 pounds of recyclables, only 6% contaminated.
The breakdown:
- Cardboard: 10,800 lbs. (45%)
- Paper: 3,840 lbs. (16%)
- Plastic (empty & dry): 3,840 lbs. (16%)
- Cans (aluminum & steel, empty & dry): 2,400 lbs. (10%)
- Glass: 1,680 lbs (7%).
This may be the cleanest load of recycling in the city’s history of recycling.
“It’s been a long road to get here. Two years in the making,” Reeves said. “We made the decision to stop a broken, contaminated mandatory recycling program that, left unfixed, would have skyrocketed customer bills. We have revived an opt-in program that has required hard work at City Sanitation and even more patience from our citizens.”
- He continued, “But this latest report, six tons of 94% clean recyclables – perhaps the cleanest of all time – is a symbol of the light at the end of the tunnel. Today we are in a better place for our citizens and for our environment.”
