Throwing the Book? Or Political Stunt

From the News Service of Florida’s

Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins was sent to California to help bring back Harjinder Singh, a native of India who, while driving a semi-tractor-trailer on Aug. 12, attempted a U-turn on Florida’s Turnpike in St. Lucie County, resulting in a crash that left three people dead.
  • “(Collins) is going to take possession of this illegal alien, extradite him back to the state of Florida,” DeSantis said Wednesday during an appearance in Palm Beach County. “We’re going to throw the book at him when he gets back here for what he did.”

Singh had already signed his extradition papers, and deputies were set to fly him back to Florida before Collins’ trip was announced.

Singh faces three counts of vehicular homicide and immigration violations, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Rep. Alex Andrade, a Pensacola Republican who has clashed with DeSantis on numerous occasions this year, questioned the expense of Collins’ trip.

  • “Why are we wasting taxpayer resources on political stunts?” Andrade posted on X. “Why was this guy (Singh) allowed to leave Florida in the first place? Why is a politician acting like a keystone cop after Singh and a California judge already agreed for him to be extradited?”

DeSantis has Asperger’s?

A text exchange between Collins and Andrade was breaking news on Florida Politics early this morning. During the exchange, the two speculated that Gov. Ron DeSantis might be on the autism spectrum.

The conversation occurred following Andrade’s April 23 podcast appearance with Laura Loomer, where the Pensacola Republican stated he believed DeSantis could be autistic. In their text exchange, Andrade pressed Collins for confirmation, writing that “incredibly successful people have Asperger’s” and noting DeSantis “shows obvious signs.”

Collins responded affirmatively but criticized Andrade for allegedly deflecting responsibility, telling him to “accept it” and “move on.”

The comments drew immediate backlash from Layla Collins, the Lt. Gov.’s wife, who called using autism “as one of your petty insults” both “low and despicable.” As the mother of a child with autism spectrum disorder, she emphasized the harmful nature of such characterizations.

This revelation emerges amid ongoing political tensions between DeSantis’s administration and the House, particularly over Andrade’s investigation into Hope Florida, a program championed by First Lady Casey DeSantis.

  1. Andrade needs to flip back a few pages in the DSM-5 and learn to recognize the differences between ASD and ASPD. Sociopathy is often mistaken as high-functioning autism, sadly.
