Running Wild and West Pensacola Elementary Partner for Socktober

West Pensacola Elementary School is once again teaming up with Running Wild and other local businesses for the annual Socktober donation drive. From October 1st to October 31st, the community is encouraged to donate new socks to be distributed to individuals in need through Opening Doors Northwest Florida.

Details: Socktober began at West Pensacola Elementary in 2020 with just 422 pairs of socks collected. Since then, the drive has grown into a community-wide effort. Thanks to the incredible support of families, businesses, and neighbors, last year’s campaign raised an astounding 3,705 pairs of socks! This year, the goal is even bigger: 4,000 pairs of socks to bring warmth and comfort to those experiencing homelessness and hardship in our area.

Why Socktober?

Did you know that the #1 most-needed but least-donated item at homeless shelters is socks? Every night in the United States, roughly 600,000 men, women, and children experience homelessness. While many generous people donate clothing, few consider donating new socks.

  • The need is urgent: living on the street is punishing on the feet, and socks quickly become worn and dirty. Dirty socks can create health issues, especially for people with diabetes or foot wounds. Warm socks are critical during the cold months, and clean, dry socks bring both comfort and dignity to those facing daily struggles.

Brad Montague, creator of Kid President, launched Socktober to raise both socks and awareness nationwide. Locally, our students, businesses, and community partners are answering the call.

“We’re proud to continue this partnership,” said the Running Wild team. “A simple pair of socks can make a huge difference, especially as the colder months approach. The generosity we’ve seen from our community is truly inspiring.”
