UWF Center for Cybersecurity Secures Largest Federal Grant Ever

The University of West Florida just made history. The UWF Center for Cybersecurity has been awarded a groundbreaking $9.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of War CIO Cyber Academic Engagement Office—the largest federal grant the university has ever received.

Details: The grant supports the expansion of the National Cybersecurity Workforce Development program, known as CyberSkills2Work.

“This milestone is a testament to the University of West Florida’s national leadership in cybersecurity education and workforce development,” said UWF Interim President Manny Diaz Jr. “Our Center for Cybersecurity continues to set the standard for innovation and impact, preparing professionals who will protect our nation’s most critical systems and drive the future of secure technology.”

By the Numbers

The scope of this initiative is impressive. Over the next two years, CyberSkills2Work will prepare more than 4,688 newly credentialed cybersecurity and AI professionals through 62 distinct educational pathways. The program prepares participants for over 24 industry certifications and 41 specialized work roles that align with Department of War and industry requirements.

  • It’s Free: The program provides free education to transitioning military personnel, veterans, first responders, military spouses, and government employees.

Background

UWF leads a coalition of nine institutions, including Columbus State University, Dakota State University, Florida International University, Metro State University, University of Arizona, University of South Florida – Cyber Florida, and the University of Texas at San Antonio. Two additional coalitions led by Purdue University Northwest and the University of Louisville complete the national effort.

  • Dr. Eman El-Sheikh, UWF Center for Cybersecurity Associate Vice President and Principal Investigator, stated,  “Cybersecurity and AI are at the heart of our nation’s defense, economy and innovation. Through this historic award and the CyberSkills2Work program, we will equip professionals with future-ready skills that integrate cybersecurity and AI to build a workforce capable of protecting and shaping tomorrow’s digital landscape.”

For Pensacola and the broader region, this grant reinforces UWF’s position as a national leader in cybersecurity education.
