UWF Women’s Basketball Makes History with Disney Showcase

The University of West Florida women’s basketball team is off to a promising 2-0 start, but an even bigger story is unfolding this week as the Argos prepare to break new ground for Division II basketball.

Coach Stephanie Yelton joined “(We Don’t) Color on the Dog” to discuss her team’s season-opening road victories over Palm Beach Atlantic and Eckerd College in Valdosta, Georgia. Despite some fourth-quarter jitters against PBA, the young Argos squad showed resilience, ultimately securing a 10-point victory before following up with a convincing 12-point win over perennial Sunshine State Conference contender Eckerd.

  • “I saw our young team grow up pretty quick in those two games,” Yelton said, noting that nine players logged at least 16 minutes of court time across the back-to-back contests.

Home Opener – Nov. 18

Before heading to Orlando, UWF hosts its home opener Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM in a local education day event designed to bring elementary and homeschool students to the Field House. The game offers the Argos’ newcomers their first chance to wear the white uniform on their home court. The team will take on Tuskegee University.  Get tickets here.

Disney Showcase

The week’s centerpiece is Friday’s appearance at the WBCA Showcase at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex—a historic moment for Division II women’s basketball. UWF became the first Division II program invited to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association event, which traditionally features top Division I teams.

The Argos will face Central Missouri, the 2019 national champions, while sharing facilities with Division I powers Miami, Davidson, Baylor, and Iowa. Mickey Mouse will present the game ball at the 11:00 AM tip-off, and the game will receive extensive media coverage typically reserved for major conference matchups.

  • “This is going to be an experience that our players don’t normally get to see day in and day out,” Yelton explained. “We want to be breaking ground and be the trailblazers for Division II women’s basketball.”
