WHAT: A Report on How Inequities in Escambia Schools Harm Our Children

The Escambia Youth Justice Coalition has invited the Southern Poverty Law Center to brief parents and guardians of county students, as well as other concerned citizens, on how the inequitable practices of Escambia County Schools are failing local children.
SPLC Florida Director of Policy David Utter and Community Advocate Keyontay Humphries will present current data on grades, graduation and dropout rates, as well as disciplinary practices that cause children to fail. School discipline—how we handle children who misbehave in school and more importantly, how we create learning environments that support and teach good behavior, and appropriately correct inappropriate behavior—is a critical part of a good school system, one that graduates students and prepares them for success. Information will show how inequitable discipline effects children’s well-being now and in the future.
Also presenting Kathy Christiansen, M.S., of the Florida Positive Behavior Support (PBS) project on an alternative to harsh disciplinary policies that push out at risk children.
