African Chamber Issue Held Off

After a lengthy discussion, City Council decided to fund roughly $205,000 for economic development for the 2010-2011 fiscal year, but made no promises as to where it would go.

Mayor Mike Wiggins said the agenda item got a bit “confusing” but talks of specific financial allocations for such groups as the African American Chamber of Commerce was put off until more discussions between Council and staff could be made.

“The conversation this morning never came to a recommendation (on where to use funding),” he said. “We’re just going to plug that money into the budget and go from there.”

Last week the Escambia County BCC voted 3-2 not to award the African American Chamber of Commerce $40,000 for next year. The chamber was seeking $10,000 from City Council.
