American Red Cross chief Mark Everson was forced to resign Tuesday, Nov. 27, after reportedly having an affair with a junior employee.
The New York Post identified the woman as working for that chapter, while The New York Times identified the woman as the “head of a Red Cross chapter on the Gulf Coast.” The Mobile Press Register reports that the Post’s description of the woman fits that of Southeast Mississippi Chapter Executive Director Paige Roberts.
According to the New York Post, which quoted unidentified Red Cross executives, the woman involved with Everson lives in Mississippi, is brunette, lost her home during Hurricane Katrina, is married with two children and is a former television reporter.
According to a 2006 profile in The Mississippi Press, Paige Roberts was a reporter at WLOX-TV 13 from 1993 to 1996 and has two children. She is also brunette.
The Roberts’ home was completely destroyed in Katrina.
The New York Times reported that the woman who had a relationship with Everson is pregnant.
That newspaper reported that the relationship between Everson and the unnamed Gulf Coast Red Cross chapter head started after “trips that were part of efforts to restore the Red Cross’ reputation there.”
Everson, the former commissioner of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, took the Red Cross job in May as the charity sought to restructure itself after sharp criticism of its response to Hurricane Katrina.
