America’s Cup shake-up, Great Britain top challenger

Great Britain moved ahead of Italy to finish in the round-robin phase as the top-seeded challenger in the America’s Cup. The Brits get to pick who they will face in the semifinals.

If they choose Switzerland, the lowest-seeded qualified team, American Magic will battle Italy in the other semifinal. The first team to win five races in each bracket will battle for the right to face the current champion, New Zealand.

American Magic will officially find out their semifinal opponents at the upcoming Press Conference on Friday, Sept. 13 — the eve of the Louis Vuitton Cup Semifinals. The team will begin their semifinal campaign on Saturday, Sept. 14, as they continue their quest for the Cup.

Losing Helmsman:
From American Magic: After securing a place in the Louis Vuitton Challenger Selection Series Semifinals, American Magic confirmed that helmsman Paul Goodison sustained an injury and is currently undergoing treatment. Paul’s recovery is being monitored daily, and we look forward to his swift return to the port helm of Patriot.

In the interim, Olympic medalist and multiple World Champion Lucas Calabrese will helm Patriot. Lucas has been an integral part of our helmsman rotation for over two years, training extensively alongside the crew, and is fully prepared to take on this role as we continue our campaign.

As a team, American Magic supports Paul in his recovery, and we are confident in the Patriot sailing team, which now includes Lucas on the port helm, to lead Patriot through the upcoming races as we focus on America’s Cup.
