Subject: Animal Services Surgery Investigation

Commissioners,

I regret to inform you that Dr. Alphonso W. Steward, III, Veterinarian of the Escambia County Animal Shelter has resigned today, February 20.

Following a series of events at the Animal Shelter, a team has been formed, including staff from Human Resources, Risk Management, the County Attorney’s office and Animal Services.

An investigation of current equipment, protocols, and policies and procedures within the Surgery Suite has begun to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all animals in the care of Escambia County Animal Services. As we know, there are many animals admitted to the Animal Shelter with unknown backgrounds in various conditions with individual needs. Our primary focus at this time is to determine any contributing factors, including procedure error or environmental factors.

We will keep everyone updated as we move through this process. Please let me know should you have questions regarding the above.

Regards,
Marilyn
