It appears that area Republicans are lining up behind Fred Thompson. Escambia County party chairman Clay Ingram is his local “grassroots” leader. State Rep. Clay Ford, R-Gulf Breeze, has been named co-chairman of “Florida Veterans for Fred.”
This won’t be the first time that area Republicans have backed the wrong candidate. Last year, many of them supported Tom Gallagher who lost to Charlie Crist in the Florida gubernatorial race. They also backed Katherine Harris against incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson – who had worked hard to help the area after Hurricane Ivan. They lost that race, too.
