Ballet Pensacola’s New Leader Is Already Looking Toward 2028

Ballet Pensacola has a new executive director, and she isn’t new to the organization at all. Bianca Villegas joined me on Rick’s Blog Live this week to talk about moving from volunteer and board member into the top staff job and about the milestone the company is building toward.

Villegas takes over as the company approaches its 50th anniversary in 2028. Rather than mark the occasion across a single performance season, Ballet Pensacola has decided to celebrate throughout the entire 2028 calendar year.

“It behooves us to think bigger picture, think of what should come next for the ballet after being around for generations,” Villegas said of stepping into the role.

From Kaleidoscope to a professional company. Longtime Pensacola dance families will remember the organization as Kaleidoscope Dance Theatre — the name Villegas says officially changed to Ballet Pensacola in 2005. The roots go back further than that:

The organization was invited to become part of the Cultural Center in 1992, which has been its home ever since
Its professional company launched in 2007, meaning 2027 marks 20 years of professional dancers on staff
The company now counts 19-plus professional members, along with an academy and pre-professional program
Students in the pre-professional track train and perform alongside the professional company on main-stage productions, a setup Villegas says is rare within a three-hour radius of Pensacola
The student company members participate in Regional Dance America.
Ballet Pensacola’s professional company has the opportunity to work every season with internationally acclaimed guest choreographers.

Her first priority: keep what works, and get louder about it. Villegas said the immediate job is protecting the community partnerships Ballet Pensacola has built over the years while finding new ways to collaborate and making sure sponsors and the public understand what the company is actually doing.

That means being explicit about cost. Villegas wants to show supporters what it actually takes financially and artistically to keep a professional dancer working through a full season, the kind of investment more often associated with much larger companies.

The bottom line: Ballet Pensacola is nearing 50 years and two decades as a professional company, and its new executive director wants the region to see it as more than a recital. It’s a working professional company with a growth plan through 2028 and beyond.
