Yesterday, Florida Congressman David Jolly came on “Pensacola Speaks” (News Talk 1370 WCOA) to explain his speech on the House floor that called for Republican front-runner Donald Trump to drop out of the 2016 presidential race.
On Monday, Trump said the United States should ban all Muslims from entering the country. He has been that 800-pound GOP gorilla that few people have been willing to really take on. Yet, Jolly did.
Why?
“I called on Donald Trump to withdraw his candidacy for the White House,” said Jolly. “I did not do so with anger. I did so, yes as a Republican, yes as an American; but frankly, as a born-again Christian, who believes in religious freedom.”
The Congressman believes that ISIS is a threat to this country. He said, “Yes, we say a security threat here in the United States. I have begged the President to do more militarily overseas, to defeat and destroy ISIS; whatever special operators by securing our border, north, south and coastal; strengthening the vetting process for those who wish to come here legally; and increasing surveillance for homegrown terror.”
However, he believes that Trump crossed the line with his comments.
“What Donald Trump has done has added a religious litmus test and it should send all of us shaking in fear, that a front-runner political candidate suggests the government can now ask you your religion and create a registry out of that,” said Jolly. “It’s wrong. Donald Trump, I believe, is no longer fit for office.”
He said that we shouldn’t confuse religious freedom with national security.
“That’s what Donald Trump is doing,” he said. “That’s why he’s short sided. Listen, we need to tend to our national security. For those of any faith who are radicalized, we need to root them out. We need to do better.”
He added, “Donald Trump is taking it one step further and saying your mere religious beliefs should be enough for government to come down on you. That’s a scary proposition. He is not leading.”
