Beulah Landfill’s Contamination Costs

The bill for the work at the Beulah Landfill is going to be a bit higher than originally thought. The price increase is due to the early June flooding the area received.

During its meeting tomorrow, the Escambia County Commission will be asked to approve an additional $144,509.82 to go toward the Beulah Landfill Remedial Action Plan. That will bring the total cost to $330,521.82.

County staff lays it out for the commissioners in provided background information: “Due to the intensity of the June 9, 2012 Rain Event, additional dewatering of the Beulah Landfill RAP project excavation was significantly increased. In addition, the size of the impacted area of contaminated soil has increased, requiring additional excavation, dewatering, backfill and soil treatment. Failure to remove additional contaminated soil could result in further Remedial activities in the future.”

The Escambia County Commission meets at the Palafox Street county offices tomorrow at 9 a.m. for its work session, and at 5:30 p.m. for the regular meeting.
