Boone Report: There is an Econ. Dev. part to trip

By IN reporter Sean Boone

The King and Queen of Spain aren’t the only reason the governor is headed to Pensacola.

On Thursday morning state and local officials will meet with Spanish representatives to talk about stimulating the local economy through the port of Pensacola.

According to Celebrate Pensacola Chair Dr. Coy Irvin, the port could be used to bring in trade from South America.

“Hopefully we can do stuff through there,” he says. “One of the largest concentrations of Spanish businesses is in Miami and South Florida and we’re trying to get them up here.”

Irvin says 11 representatives from Spanish companies already came to Pensacola the first week of January to look at what business opportunities the area could bring them.

The Spanish royalty visit today and tomorrow is different than other stops they are making in weeks ahead because it is including a “private visit by the state,” according to Irvin.

“This will definitely be treated differently than (the Kings) upcoming trip to Jamacia (to do business).”
