Breaking News: DeSantis to appoint Moody to Senate seat

AXIOS reports Gov. Ron DeSantis will appoint Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to replace Sen. Marco Rubio when he leaves his office to become the next U.S. Secretary of State, according to a source briefed on the deliberations. The announcement is probably being now at a press conference in Orlando.

Why it matters: Moody’s appointment will set off a chain reaction of office-seeking and Florida political drama heading into 2026. It clears the way for DeSantis to name his chief of staff, James Uthmeier, to replace her as AG. Also Moody was ap potential candidate for governor in 2026. Matt Gaetz has one less opponent should he run for governor.
