Century votes down gas tax

The Century Town Council voted 3-2 Monday night against supporting the tax for Escambia County Area Transit. According to NorthEscambia.com, the sticking point was ECAT officials wouldn’t give any guarantees that one bus route to their town wouldn’t be cut in the future.

Council member Nadine McCaw, who voted against the tax increase, said she was tired of agencies promising great benefits for Century and then pulling their services out of town. Citing the loss of courthouse services, the hospital, the health department and the town’s last school, McCaw said she would not support the town supporting ECAT funding without concrete service guarantees.

Century is sadly becoming irrelevant. It has no website so citizens have no easy way to examine the town’s budget. What services does the town provide its citizens or is Century simply a ward of the county?

Without NorthEscambia.com, few of us would ever know what’s happening there.
