Today, the City of Pensacola kicks off its celebration of Florida Bicycle Month, a time to encourage bicycling and recognize its important role in providing transportation and recreation to city residents and visitors. Mayor Grover Robinson will present an official proclamation at the Thursday, March 10 City Council meeting recognizing March as Florida Bicycle Month, and the city is participating in several events to celebrate.
“Riding bicycles is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels, whether it’s for exercise or just recreation with your family,” Mayor Robinson said. “We are proud to join the State of Florida in recognizing March as Florida Bicycle Month, and we are continuing to work hard at the City of Pensacola to create a more bicycle-friendly community. I hope our residents will take the opportunity this month and every month to get outside and explore our beautiful city by bicycle.”
To get your wheels turning for Florida Bike Month, check out Safe Riding Routes developed by Bike Pensacola and available on the City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation website. The city will also be participating in Ciclovia on Saturday, March 26, which closes several streets in downtown Pensacola to motorized traffic and opens them up for people to ride bikes, walk, run, play, or whatever moves them.
Bicyclists and drivers should always follow good safety practices and stay alert when traveling.
“The city encourages all bicyclists to always be aware of their surroundings and follow the rules of the road,” City of Pensacola Transportation Planner Caitlin Cerame said. “Drivers should also watch for bicyclists and pass safely. Florida law requires that drivers allow a minimum of 3 feet between your vehicle and bicyclists when passing. Remember to share the road and demonstrate mutual respect for your fellow road users.â€
