City Council workshops planned, transparency still a problem

Ashton
Pensacola City Council President Andy Terhaar emailed the schedule for upcoming workshops on many of the issues I brought up yesterday.

The CBRE and Maritime Park proposals will be discussed in a workshop on Thursday, June 18 at 4 p.m. –before the regular council meeting.

The film commission idea will be discussed in a workshop on Monday, July 13.

The budget workshops are set for July 20, 21 and 22.

The city council meetings are the only time the public gets an unfiltered view of what is happening inside Pensacola city government. The agendas for those meetings provide a road map–imperfect as it may be –of what city staff has been doing.

Otherwise, it’s press releases, Facebook posts and digital newsletters like “Upwards” and “Uplift.”

Since the last council meeting on May 14, we have had:

On Facebook, we have items and photos of the Mayor regarding Armed Services Week, Gulf Coast Lionfish Coalition, Tugboat christening, Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic, Memorial Day, Instagram milestone (4), Upwords, Elcano (3), hurricane season (video), Washington Times article on beach, “Heroes Among Us,” RESTORE workshop (2), Employee Recognition, Chick-Fil-A (2), BRACE workshop (2), Gun & Garden article on Wahoo food, Plaza de Luna Splashpad, and Neighborhood Cleanup.

Nothing on DeepFlex at Port of Pensacola, VT-MAE at airport, fish hatchery, CBRE & Maritime Park, City Budget, Disparity Study, Homelessness, Blount School property, stormwater, future of DIB or hiring the new airport director and fire chief. The council meetings are the only time the public gets a glimpse of what is really happening in city hall. It’s a shame the council only meets once a month.
