City rules for county neighborhoods

The daily newspaper has an article on attempt in Scenic Hills subdivision to create an Enhanced Neighborhood Protection zone whereby they can:

  • Restrict any outbuildings or sheds to not be visible from the street.
  • Restrict fences to back yards.
  • RVs, travel trailers or campers can’t be parked on a property for more than seven days a month.

Of course, the property rights advocates are going nuts.

What you really have is an area in the county wanting to be more like a city without paying any city taxes or have the full democratic mechanisms in place to govern its neighborhood. We see the same thing with law enforcement, fire protection and code enforcement…all services a city can provide at a higher level of service than a county.

In Midway in south Santa Rosa County, you have fire district with a millage rate almost has high as the property tax rate for the city of Gulf Breeze.

More of Escambia County needs to be annexed into the city of Pensacola. Areas like Perdido Key, Pace, Navarre and Midway need to incorporate and deal with their problems without having to go to a county commission.
