On Saturday, Nov. 18, at 1 p.m., Congressman Matt Gaetz will be hosting the 2017 Congressional App Challenge and STEM/ Cybersecurity Expo at the University of West Florida’s Pensacola campus.
The Congressional App Challenge is a public effort to encourage kids to learn how to code. Students in participating districts code original applications for the chance to be selected for recognition by their Member of Congress, win prizes, and have their work put on display in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.
“With more and more sectors of America’s economy going digital, STEM, cybersecurity, and computer science backgrounds are in high demand by employers nationwide. I am proud to host the Congressional App Challenge, and to see students across Northwest Florida taking an interest in these vital fields. These kids are the future of America,†Rep. Gaetz said.

TIME: 1–4 p.m.
LOCATION: University of West Florida’s Pensacola campus
WHO: Open to the community
WHAT: 2017 Congressional App Challenge and STEM/ Cybersecurity Expo
Kicking off the event from 1–3 p.m., an expo will take place recognizing the students participating in the App Challenge, as well as connecting students and parents with local resources in the fields of STEM and Computer Science. The expo will be located in the in the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering, Building 4.
Also beginning at 1 p.m., students participating in the App Challenge will have their displays set up as well in the Hal Marcus College of Science and Engineering, Building 4. Congressman Gaetz and the judges will visit with students to review their submissions and discuss the competition.
The awards ceremony for the App Challenge will begin at 3 p.m., in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts. Congressman Gaetz will speak about STEM and Cybersecurity, and will present awards to the winners of the App Challenge. A reception will immediately follow the awards ceremony.
