What’s a twelve-week marathon? It’s a special kid’s marathon for children ages 5-12 in which participants can run, walk, or wheel-chair 25 miles over twelve weeks at school or home, and ends with a final 1.2-mile run following the Pensacola Marathon on November 9, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. Upon completion, the young athletes will have ran, walked, or wheel-chaired a full 26.2 mile marathon.

Registration for the Subway Kids Marathon is now open by visiting www.subwaykidsmarathon.com or by contacting your child’s PE teacher, track coach or running club.

A kick-off event will be Saturday, September 20 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Washington High School track. Jared from Subway will be in attendance to speak to the young athletes, get them motivated, and log a mile for their marathon journey.

Kids can monitor their progress with an interactive training log website which is geared to youth runners. As the participant completes his/her next milestone, it shows their progress on a fun log and awards them with coupons and tips along the way.

Major sponsors include Subway, Running Wild, Sacred Heart Health System, and the Pensacola Sports Association. Each participant will receive:

Pensacola KIDS MARATHON T-shirt
Pensacola KIDS MARATHON medallion upon crossing the finish line
Official race number
Training materials
Official mileage log
SUBWAY® and other refreshments at the Pensacola Marathon finish line

Participants will have twelve weeks (starting August 18) to compete 25 miles in half or one mile increments. The final 1.2 miles will be run the day of the Pensacola Marathon – Sunday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 p.m. – in which every child will run through the Pensacola Marathon finish line structure and will be awarded their finishers medal.

This program is supported by the Escambia (FL) and Santa Rosa county school districts and LiveWell NWFL’s 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! initiative. The 5-2-1-0 Let’s Go! initiative promotes healthy lifestyle habits to children ages 5 to 12, their families, teachers, and caregivers.

This program is not limited to local students. Athletes in neighboring counties are welcome to participate and log their miles. Many children from out of state registered, logged their miles, and traveled down with their parents who were participating in the half or full marathon.
